Keeping up skills with practice work

While I haven’t taken on other UI work in recent years, I have tackled some personal design projects to expand on my repertoire and to better understand the conventions of different types of applications. A lifestyle app can look and function very differently from one for finance or eCommerce. It’s my job to understand how and why – and when these rules can be broken.

As I enjoy both gadgets and DIY, I’ve become a small-time laser cutting hobbyist. It’s a great combination of art and tech, and you’ll never run out of ideas for Christmas presents!

Even if I don’t see myself as a photographer, I’ve amassed a reasonable amount of gear from lenses to gimbals and studio equipment. Photography is a fascinating field and I hope to improve in it over time.

SCULPTING

Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to participate in some interesting things, such as sand sculpting courses and the Finnish national snow sculpting competition. While my team was certainly quite awful at it, it makes for a great story.

Miscellaneous creative ventures

Hand drawn

While I rarely find the time to draw nowadays, I still occasionally enjoy picking up a pencil, a marker or a drawing tablet to doodle with. As drawing is more of an outlet than a job for me, most pieces never make it past the early stages – and I’m okay with that.

I also occasionally supplement my commercial work by freehanding content and utilize a drawing tablet for photo editing and other kinds of precise work.
